Step 2 Men’s Gazette

July 20, 2025 Vol. One No. 93

AUGUST 29

I CHOOSE ANONYMITY

We are sure that humility, expressed by anonymity, is the greatest safeguard that Alcoholics Anonymous can ever have.

TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p. 187

Since there are no rules in A.A. I place myself where I want to be, and so I choose anonymity. I want my God to use me, humbly, as one of His tools in this program. Sacrifice is the art of giving of myself freely, allowing humility to replace my ego. With sobriety, I suppress that urge to cry out to the world, “I am a member of A.A.” and I experience inner joy and peace. I let people see the changes in me and hope they will ask what happened to me. I place the principles of spirituality ahead of judging, fault-finding, and criticism. I want love and caring in my group, so I can grow.

Always on my Mind

You know, if I asked you to give me a list of five or so of your shortcomings or flaws that you would like your Higher  Power to remove, you might look at me like Mark W. does and ask. “What do you mean? “

Perhaps that is the perfection one attains with forty years of sobriety.

For the rest of us, I could ask you the same question and in most honesty,  you would not be able  to give  me more than one or two. Yet, if we worked at it, we could open door number three and find fifty more.

I would have more luck trying to catch a greased pig at the State Fair in a Sunday, Going to Meetin’ suit than list all of the character defects I have. The list is too long and too complicated and shaded in many circumstances. I mean, c’mon, some of those guys had it coming.

I have told the story of Ray ad nauseum.  In brief, he was the guy I met early on in AA who took me aside and said I only had to get Step One down, the rest I could work on.  I do not think this missive is more accurate than in contemplating Step Seven.

Two reasons.   None of us can remember all of our flaws from a static position.  We barely remember them when someone like an x-wife is explaining them in detail.

Second, to be thorough, it’s best to take our time in removing these defects. Some  make take a lot of time, practice and discipline.

It is something to work on.

Best Wishes to our Own Dave Meeker

“Mouse’s Corner”

Mouse's Corner

A.A. member Dave Mc. curates a few selected readings from a variety of A.A. related publications each month.

If we are about to ask forgiveness for ourselves, why shouldn’t we start out by forgiving (people), one and all?

As Bill sees it page 151

We thought “conditions” drove us to drink, and when we tried to correct these conditions and found that we couldn’t do so to our entire satisfaction, our drinking went out of hand and we became alcoholics. It never ocurred to us that we needed to change ourselves to meet conditions, whatever they were.

Step 2 Men’s Group Believes…

“Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.”

We’d never presume that the 12 Steps are not clear. Nor would we imply that they need ‘improvement’. However…for purposes of assisting to keep the meeting pointed in an important direction each day, the “Step 2 Men’s Group Statement” is read as follows:

Step 2 Men’s Group is founded on the belief that spirituality is essential to our sobriety.

Our group is non-religious, but we do not oppose anyone’s religious beliefs. We believe that respect for others and their beliefs is essential to our spiritual development.

Accordingly we ask that avoid criticism of others or of their religion or lack of religion, their race, ethnicity, national origin, age, sexual orientation, physical appearance, trade or profession, length of sobriety, or personal beliefs.

Our goal is to further our spirituality, our sobriety and our personal development, not to confront or belittle others. Always remember to be kind to others.
